When did you join RIS? What were you doing beforehand?
I started to work for RIS in 2004 when we were agents for Suncorp – in 2010 my wife Jackie and myself purchased RIS and have taken it to where it is today.
What is your role at RIS and what does a typical day look like for you?
I am the director of RIS – the funny thing is, there is no typical day in Insurance. You can have a day planned out when you wake up and the first phone call can change all that!
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the fact that every day is different – you are always learning no matter how long you have been in the industry. We have got a fantastic client base that diversifies across many different industries – this is what keeps me getting out of bed every day.
What makes RIS special in comparison to other places you’ve worked?
For myself, this is the first time that I have worked for myself. While this does come with the added pressures of owning a business, I enjoy the challenges. I have worked in a few places in the past, which has also been enjoyable, but I like to think that we have got a great team environment at RIS, and I get to deal with many people every single day.
What is your proudest moment at RIS?
The proudest moment for me would be the fact that Jackie and myself have taken this business and made it our own. When we took over in 2010 Roma suffered three years of floods, that accompanied by the fact that we moved from Suncorp across to a full-service brokerage. Sleep back then was optional, but we got through it – unsure how but we did! We often look back and wonder how this was ever achieved.
What book did you read last? What did you like/dislike about it?
Cameron Smith – Autobiography – love him or hate him, he went through a lot to get to where he is and what he has achieved – this book opens up a lot of what he went through.
What would be the title of your autobiography? Why?
“Just be YOU” – I believe that if you are just yourself through your life and don’t try to be a different person this is going to make you more successful. I try and apply this within everything that I do in life, some people won’t like it, but most will praise it.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?
There are many people in this world that inspire you each and every day – to be able to meet just one of them would be hard.
If you were stuck on an island what three things would you bring and why?
My family, My computer (as you can’t work without one of those 😊), and Beer (just because you need to have beer!!)
What is the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? Why?
Insurance Broker – not unusual, but interesting – each and every day there are many stories that could be told.
